Sunderland's League One match against Burton suspended for over 50 minutes by medical emergency after fan fell ill in the West Stand and had to be taken to hospital

Sunderland's match with Burton Albion was temporarily suspended on Tuesday night due to a medical emergency in the stands.

The teams were just four minutes into the League One fixture when referee Robert Lewis paused proceedings after a fan fell ill in the West Stand.

Both teams were ordered to return to their respective dressing rooms while stewards cleared a path to allow emergency services access to the stricken supporter.

The game was held up for around 50 minutes while the fan received treatment before he was eventually taken to the hospital.
