Sunderland boss David Moyes has said he turned down the chance to sign England No. 1 Joe Hart this summer because he wanted to put his faith in Jordan Pickford.
Hart, 29, joined Torino on a season-long loan in August after new Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola expressed doubts as to whether he could immediately adapt to his tactical requirements.
Moyes said he considered bringing in Hart but ultimately felt it was better to put his faith in 22-year-old Pickford.
"When I arrived, Vito Mannone was probably the No. 1 on experience but his injury meant we needed to turn to Jordan and he has stood up to all we've asked of him," Moyes said in the Sunderland Echo.
