Sunderland appoint former Norwich boss Alex Neil as new manager after Roy Keane snubbed chance of taking charge of Black Cats for a second time

Sunderland have appointed Alex Neil as their new permanent manager, the League One club announced on Friday night.

The former Norwich City and Preston North End manager signed a 12-month rolling contract at the Stadium of Light and will replace Lee Johnson, who was sacked after the Black Cats were thrashed 6-0 by Bolton at the end of January.

'It is a privilege to be head coach of Sunderland AFC,' Neil said in a statement to the club's official website.
