Mick McCarthy named Cardiff City boss with the Bluebirds convinced by his Championship track record and no-nonsense approach after dismal run saw Neil Harris sacked

Mick McCarthy has been announced as Cardiff's new manager.

The former Republic of Ireland, Sunderland and Wolves boss succeeds Neil Harris, who left the club on Thursday following six successive defeats.

McCarthy, 61, was free to take up the reins of the Sky Bet Championship side after he severed ties with APOEL on January 6 after just nine games and two months in charge.

McCarthy told Cardiff City TV: 'I'm delighted to be here. I'm thrilled by the opportunity.

'I want to get the club back to winning games and I want to get smiles back on the players' faces.
