Jermain Defoe is close to completing an emotional return to Sunderland at 39 after the former England striker terminated his contract with Scottish champions Rangers

Sunderland are close to agreement with free agent Jermain Defoe. The 39-year-old is agreeing a contract until the end of the season.

Defoe became a free agent following the mutual termination of his Rangers contract at the start of January and had been linked with a move to either Oxford United and Charlton Athletic.

However, Sunderland are said to be in pole position land the forward - who spent three seasons on Wearside between 2015-2017.

During his time at the club, Defoe scored a total of 37 goals in 93 games in all competitions for Sunderland.
