Chris Coleman says he has taken on the Sunderland job with his ‘eyes wide open’ to their financial constraints but could not turn down the chance to manage what will be the biggest club of his career.
The 47-year-old was unveiled at the Championship’s bottom side on Monday morning after quitting as boss of Wales on Friday night, as revealed by Sportsmail.
Coleman arrives at a club with debts of £110million and inherits a team who have just set a new English record after going 20 matches without victory at the Stadium of Light.
His decision to step away from the national-team post and take on the challenge at Sunderland has come as shock, but Coleman insisted: ‘There has been plenty negativity happening here, but this will probably be the biggest club I will ever manage.
