Gary Rowett asks Derby County for permission to speak to Stoke City about becoming their new boss

Gary Rowett is on the verge of being appointed as Stoke City's new boss.

The 44-year-old has asked Derby County for permission to speak to the Potters about their managerial vacancy and the two clubs are in talks over a compensation package.

Rowett was on Stoke's radar in January after they sacked Mark Hughes but he rejected their interest and signed a new contract with Derby.

However, the relegated club have now revived their interest in the former Birmingham boss and a deal is close.

Stoke parted company with Paul Lambert last week after he failed to keep the club in the Premier League and believe Rowett is the man to lead them back into the top-flight.
