Top of the order powers Cardinals again

MILWAUKEE • The Cardinals didn’t have to rely on their best friend, the home run, Tuesday night, although they got one anyway, a putaway three-run shot by Jedd Gyorko in the eighth inning. They didn’t really need Matt Holliday’s solo homer the day before, although it did travel about a half a mile.

When your leadoff man has eight hits — everything but a homer — in two days and the top three hitters in the lineup combine for 17 hits in those two games, clearing the fences isn’t all that necessary.

Matt Carpenter, putting together one of the best back-to-back performances in Cardinals history, had two triples, a double and a single and was robbed of another hit, following up his two doubles and two singles the day before.
