Rondon, Moroff catch Cardinals' eyes but how they hit could lift them over roster obstacles

JUPITER, Fla. — No matter how many different gloves they carry, two utility infielders who have done the most to impress this spring — and have the most to overcome — know the way onto the Cardinals’ opening day roster starts at the plate.

The bat they brought can carry them.

“I’d say so,” Max Moroff said. “I think the bat is probably more valuable than the glove. The bat is obviously more important. I’m trying to take advantage of my opportunity, whether it’s three at-bats or that one at-bat. Every one counts.”

Moroff and Jose Rondon, two nonroster invites to spring training, have lasted in the competition for the final bench spots as the Cardinals reach the final weekend of exhibition games before leaving Florida by Tuesday.
