Playoff fever? Not at half-filled Busch, where Carpenter gets sick and depleted Cards fall

The Cardinals were held to five hits and shut out for the first time under new manager Mike Shildt. Their lead was trimmed to one-half game over Milwaukee for the first wild-card spot in the National League, and they’re 1½ games ahead of Colorado.

Jose Martinez, a .325 hitter with men in scoring position, struck out. Tyler O’Neill lofted a popup into short center field, where second baseman Adam Frazier made a brilliant back-to-the-infield catch. Carpenter got halfway down the third-base line, and by the time he retreated to third to tag, it was too late to come home.
