Initial reports estimated St. Louis Cardinals backup catcher Brayan Pena would miss 2-4 weeks following arthroscopic surgery to remove loose cartilage from his left knee. MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch reports that he's now expected to miss a month.
Manager Mike Matheny wasn't surprised by the lengthier projected recovery time for Pena. "It was just the loose particle, and it's where they thought it might be," Matheny told Langosch, "It was in a spot that was going to continue to be an issue. I think it was the right move to get that extracted.
