It has been a rough year for one of St. Louis’ most well-known voices of the past half-century.
But it’s Derby week, and Jay Randolph sounds reenergized and is enthusiastic over the phone when discussing one of his favorite pastimes — horse racing — and playing down the struggles he has fought in recent months.
“Let’s just say I’ve had a myriad of physical problems,” said Randolph, 86. “And that’s not unexpected at my age.”
He has been hospitalized twice in the last six months and has had three stints in a physical rehab facility. Included in his troubles have been mobility issues, but he is making progress.
