JUPITER, Fla. • Manager Mike Shildt has taken to discussing the “reliever of the day,” relative to the volume of potential relievers in the Cardinals’ bullpen. The topic du jour Thursday was Mike Mayers, who made 50 appearances in 2018, with six trips to Class AAA Memphis mixed in, along with missing three weeks in late August and early September with right shoulder inflammation.
“He picked up some big innings for us,” said Shildt, referring to Mayers having to get at least four outs on 11 occasions. “He had a setback physically (and) came back but still was feeling for his command a little.
