If you ask manager Mike Matheny, as he was interrogated on Saturday, he all but said, “Why not Jose Martinez?”
“He’s going to fight for it,” said Matheny. “I don’t know why he couldn’t (be the regular first baseman). We’ve been pushing right down to the last few days of the season and he’s been batting fourth and playing first base for us, so I think that says what we think about him.
“There’s going to be some competition there, too,” said Matheny.
