With the 11th pitch of the game from Mike Leake, the Milwaukee Brewers had a lead the Cardinals would spend nine innings, two lengthy rain delays, and a few rallies chasing.
Getting close was never enough to overcome.
The Cardinals’ control freak Leake had a control fritz in the early innings Wednesday and walked the first batter of the game on seven pitches. The fourth pitch to the next batter soared for a home run, and before Leake got an out the Brewers took a two-run lead. Eric Thames had the homer and a total of three RBIs before the Cardinals sent their fourth batter to the plate.
