If Cardinals do not add or discover boost for lagging offense, it could be splitsville for lineup

During a recent interview meant to substitute for the town hall-style event he annually entertains with fans, Cardinals executive John Mozeliak outlined how the club and industry approach the 2021 season with a multitude of unknowns.

And he conceded one certainty the Cardinals cannot duck.

“We have to see an uptick in our offense,” the president of baseball operations said, “or it’s going to be a long year.”

If they don’t make an addition, they’ll try division.

Whether it goes by the classic label “platoon” or the snazzier, modern buzzwords like “aggregate” or “holistic” or “lineup optimization,” an approach showcased in the World Series and dabbled in by the Cardinals will be part of their internal plans to upgrade the offense.
