HOUSTON • The thought did cross manager Mike Matheny’s mind that this past Thursday, when a fastball fractured Matt Holliday’s right thumb, that he had just seen his left fielder’s final at-bat of the season, and thus possibly as a Cardinal.
Holliday made a choice Tuesday to try to hit again this season.
The Cardinals’ No. 3 hitter and one of the longest-tenured players on the team elected to have surgery Wednesday to insert support in his right thumb and aid the healing process. Holliday said it was the consensus of the doctors who advised him that surgery was the only option that would possibly allow him to play again this season.
