On a Windy City whim, 35 Junes ago, it all began inside the gloriously green neighborhood nook.
The St. Louis 20-somethings had the idea on a Thursday — and they were at Wrigley Field on Friday.
“If you grow up in St. Louis, you're just indoctrinated to be a Cardinal fan,” said Brendan Connaughton, who was 23 in the summer of 1987. “And so, this kind of combined my love of baseball with my love of my buddies and my love of having a good time. It's not like we didn't drink a ton of beer.”
In fact, after indulging in a few beverages inevitably brewed back home, they found themselves in a bit of a kerfuffle with Cubs fans.
