Gordo: Lost revenue creates huge challenge for MLB owners, players

Professional baseball is back in Taiwan and South Korea, albeit in empty stadiums. It should return in some form later this year in North America.

But executing even a soft MLB reopening amid the ongoing pandemic will be difficult. It would require unprecedented collaboration between owners and the players association and sacrifice from both sides.

The NHL and NBA are taking a financial bath, too, but they have already collected much of their money for this season. They aren’t staring at the evaporation of an entire home schedule of venue-driven revenue.

Forbes Magazine estimated the Cardinals’ 2019 revenues at $383 million, with $138 million coming at the gate.
