CHICAGO • Since Major League Baseball expanded its use of video replay but drew a line at anything regarding fair and foul calls in front of the umpire, there has been a percolating question for managers and players to wonder:
Why?
The Cardinals had to confront the lack of an answer to that question in the seventh inning of Tuesday night’s 5-3 loss to the Chicago Cubs. The tying run and the decisive inning unraveled on the Cardinals because of a call by an umpire that could not be challenged and could not be reviewed simply because of where it took place on the field.
