Going with lefty-heavy lineup pays off for Shildt

The Cardinals had scored only four runs in regulation time in their past four games, which, not surprisingly, were all losses. So manager Mike Shildt shifted to the left and employed six lefthanded swingers against Cleveland righthander Aaron Civale on Sunday.

Tommy Edman, who rarely had been in the outfield this season, started in left, with Tyler O’Neill sitting and Dylan Carlson, like Edman, a switch hitter, starting over Harrison Bader in center.

Before the game, Shildt talked of the “balancing act of patience and production.

“We haven’t been able to score as many runs as we need to,” said Shildt.
