PITTSBURGH • The Cardinals lost a challenge in the 11th inning and soon they lost the game Tuesday night, falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5.
Cardinals relievers retired 18 men in a row from the fifth through the 11th before losing pitcher Seth Maness walked Gregory Polanco with one out. Josh Harrison sent a grounder headed for center field, and shortstop Jedd Gyorko dived to stop the ball but was unable to flip it to Kolten Wong at the second-base bag. The ball rolled toward Wong but, stretching his 5-foot-9 frame, he was unable to grab it and touch the bag ahead of the sliding Polanco.
