Former STLer, Apollo 11 engineer remained Redbird fan through life

With baseball season opening here Thursday, let us note the death of Russell J. Kelly — who not only attended many Cardinals home openers, but also once kept his finger on some very important pulses.

Kelly, who grew up in Florissant and graduated from Christian Brothers College High School, died Wednesday in North Carolina. He was 77. Services were held Saturday.

After earning degrees from St. Louis and Colorado State universities in biomedical engineering, Mr. Kelly worked in St. Louis for NASA on the Mercury space program. Later, he moved to Houston to work on the Apollo missions.
