Prearranged on the schedule so that his next start can be Game 1 of a playoff series, if the Cardinals qualify, Jack Flaherty gave a revealing hint Friday night about his search for traction this season when he tumbled off the mound.
During Christian Yelich’s at-bat in the third inning of Flaherty’s start vs. Milwaukee at Busch Stadium, the righthander’s left cleat slipped on its outside edge as he tried to plant and deliver a pitch. Flaherty’s ankle rolled and then so did he into a seated position at the base of the mound. The pain spiked and then defused, allowing Flaherty to continue his start.
