Female owner of Cardinals featured in 'Women of Baseball' exhibit

If it is so that behind every good man stands a good woman, the 11-time World Series champion Cardinals have fallen right into lockstep. As a one-year addition to their Hall of Fame and Museum at Ballpark Village, they will add beginning on Friday a new exhibit titled, “Women in Baseball: How They Made History.”

Specific to the Cardinals, the display, which has more than 100 artifacts, will feature Helene Britton, believed to be the first woman to own a major league sports team. Also included is a tribute to Allie May Schmidt, who is responsible for the “birds on the bat” logo, initiated by her decorations at a church event in Ferguson when club general manager Branch Rickey was in attendance in 1921.
