The Cardinals have drafted a third consecutive college position player: St. Mary's second-baseman Zach Kirtley.
Kirtley is the number 317 prospect according to Baseball America. He started in all three of his seasons at St. Mary's, moving from third base to second for his junior season. His best tool is his hitting ability, particularly his strike zone judgment.
Kirtley began to draw attention with his strong 2016 season in the Cape Cod League -- a favorite place of the Cardinals for evaluating talent. His running ability and his range defensively are seen as his biggest weaknesses.
