Diaz cracks 11th HR to give Cards 1-0 lead

Aledmys Diaz, who had missed three games after fouling off a ball which ricocheted off his right eyebrow, appears to be having little trouble seeing now.

Diaz cracked his fifth hit in the last three games, a 424-foot drive to left in the first inning to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead Sunday over the Milwaukee Brewers, who had lost the first two games of a three-game series to the Cardinals. The homer was the rookie’s 11th and only seven times in the club’s history has a Cardinals shortstop had more than 11 homers.

In addition to that blast, Matt Carpenter and Matt Holliday sent Milwaukee outfielders to the warning track for long fly outs, Stephen Piscotty singled hard to left off Chase Anderson and Brandon Moss hit a long drive foul to right before Anderson finally exited the first by getting Moss to look at a third strike.
