Calling the vibe around his team "fresh" and the turnaround led by interim manager Mike Shildt "impressive," Cardinals chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said a search for the team's next manager is not happening in the background and Shildt hasn't done anything but make a strong case for the job.
The Cardinals won 18 of their first 28 games since Shildt took over as manager, and he had the best start to that point of any of the team's 50 managers. With a 5-2 win Friday night over Milwaukee, Shildt matched the best 30-game start ever by a manager, at 20-10, set by Ray Blades in 1939 and Rogers Hornsby in 1925.
