Cooney slowed down after shoulder soreness

JUPITER, Fla. • The combination of what Tim Cooney felt inside his shoulder and the Cardinals’ training staff found around his left shoulder caused a pause in the lefty’s spring.

Cooney has been removed from the normal throwing program and put on a different schedule, one focused on strengthening the shoulder and arm before utilizing it in a competitive situation. Cooney, who is auditioning this spring to be one of the team’s go-to starters at Class AAA, and righthanded starter Carlos Martinez are the two starting pitchers on slower schedules than their peers, though neither has had his throwing completely halted.
