Carpenter homers on first pitch vs. Brewers

MILWAUKEE -- A big part of the Cardinals' recent slide has been how they continued to find themselves in early deficits. St. Louis played from behind in each of the past three games in Philadelphia, surrendering first-inning runs in each contest.

They began an important four-game set Thursday by pulling that same trick on the Brewers, when Matt Carpenter sent Brent Suter's first pitch of the game over the center field wall for a leadoff homer. The lead did not last long, however.
