Cards waste big chance in first, trail Pirates 2-1 in fourth

In the top of the second, the Pirates got even. Josh Bell hit a leadoff double to straightaway center, followed by a very wild pitch by Dakota Hudson, that was so wild it almost worked in the Cardinals favor when it caromed off the wall behind home plate and back to catcher Matt Wieters, who barely moved and who almost Bell at third. Jose Osuna hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. The Pirates almost went ahead after a single by Colin Moran but Jacob Stalling's hit into the right-field corner bounced into the stands for a ground-rule double, stopping Kevin Newman, who had taken gotten on after forcing Moran at second, at third.
