ST. LOUIS • In a trade that was as much about finding Tony Cruz an opportunity as it was to get a return on their long-time backup catcher, the Cardinals sent Cruz to Kansas City on Wednesday morning for a teenage infielder.
The Cardinals acquired Jose Martinez, a 19-year-old Venezuelan who spent this past season in short-season rookie ball with the Royals.
Cruz goes from backing one catcher who rarely takes a day off to another, Salvador Perez, who openly talks about emulating Yadier Molina's game. They each won a Gold Glove Award this past season.
