Cards notes: When Peralta returns, infield shuffle could begin

An all-day rain curtailed any on-field hitting that rehabbing Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta would have been involved in Tuesday afternoon. But general manager John Mozeliak said that after Peralta returns to the field for drills, it’s possible that the veteran could go on a medical rehabilitation option as early as this weekend or early next week.

Peralta, 34, is recovering from left thumb surgery he underwent in March and has hit in the cages but has not faced any Cardinals pitchers — or even coaches — outside.

“We can replicate that on a rehab,” Mozeliak said.

According to the rules, the rehab could last as long as 20 days.
