WASHINGTON • While new rules are in place this season to help hasten baseball’s pace of play, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny has not veered from his plan to introduce them slowly and only when necessary to his players.

Matheny confirmed Wednesday that the Cardinals have started receiving notifications from Major League Baseball about pace-of-play infractions by individual players. These infractions can be as small as stepping out of the box after a called strike.
