The Cardinals began preparing rookie Jack Flaherty to make Saturday’s open start against Pittsburgh at PNC Park and made it official Tuesday night. Flaherty was set to start Wednesday for Class AAA Memphis, but a Cardinals official said they notified the Redbirds of the change in their rotation. Flaherty is 3-0 with a 2.25 ERA for the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate, and he stood out from a group that also included Austin Gomber, who struck out 16 on Monday, and John Gant. All three are on the 40-man roster. All three could be called to contribute in the majors — at some point.
