Cardinals notebook: Cecil goes down with injury

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Wednesday’s injury report for the Cardinals was mostly positive for Andrew Miller and Paul Goldschmidt, but decidedly negative for star-crossed lefthanded reliever Brett Cecil.

His chance to make the club out of spring training went out the window the same way his hamstring went out as he tried to cover first base in the sixth inning.

Cecil, oft sidelined in his first three seasons with the Cardinals — including missing last season because of carpal tunnel syndrome — struck out the first man he faced in the Cards’ 7-3 exhibition-game loss to the New York Mets.
