The St. Louis Cardinals have added youth to the 40-man roster and designated a veteran reliever for assignment to make room.
John Denton of MLB.com is reporting that catcher Leonardo Bernal, outfielder Joshua Baez along with left-handed pitchers Cooper Hjerpe and Brycen Mautz are now on the 40-man for protection from the upcoming Rule 5 draft. Reliever Jorge Alcala was designated for assignment.
In other news from around the league: Josh Naylor was re-signed by the Seattle Mariners to a 5-year, 92 million dollar contract. He credited the clubhouse dog, a Labrador Retriever named Tucker, for making him feel at home in Seattle after the mid-season trade.
