JUPITER, Fla. • As he maps out the pitchers' program for his first spring training as pitching coach for the Cardinals, Mike Maddux, one of the most-seasoned in his field, apparently has two tell-tale metrics.
He wants to finish the day with as many pitchers as he started.
He wants to know that quickly because the day has gone quickly.
"A successful day is when we start with 32 and we end with 32," Maddux said Wedneday morning a few hours before the first official workout of spring training for pitchers and catchers. "That's a successful day.
