Cardinals feel time is right and prospect Thompson is right fit for Kile's No. 57 to be worn again

Cardinals prospect Zack Thompson’s No. 57 jersey hangs Thursday afternoon at a locker inside the team’s spring training clubhouse. Thompson, a first-round pick in 2018, is the first player to wear No. 57 since Darryl Kile in 2002, the year Kile died while a starter for the Cardinals. The team has decided to reintroduce the number, selecting Thompson for what officials consider an honor. (Photo courtesy of Mark Walsh)

JUPITER, Fla. – The number, heavy with history, was hung with care and purpose at prospect Zack Thompson’s locker this week.

When the Cardinals decided the time was right to stitch it onto a red jersey again, they wanted to choose someone right to carry its weight back up the mound for the first time in nearly two decades.
