Cardinals brace for Mikolas to miss season’s start as shoulder soreness ‘lingers’

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — Describing himself as not “overly worried” but definitely “overly cautious,” Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas will have his throwing program delayed indefinitely for a series of exams Wednesday to determine why soreness persists in his right shoulder.

An “aggressive” round of catch Tuesday that was supposed to be prelude to a bullpen session Wednesday instead forced a detour. Mikolas experienced the same discomfort that has kept him off the mound for nearly two weeks. The righthander will have imaging scans taken of his shoulder and arm to determine if there is a sinister underlying cause for the soreness beyond his recovery from forearm surgery.
