A longtime prospect that the Cardinals invested time, patience, and millions in because of the potential of his golden right arm, Alex Reyes became a free agent Friday night when the only team he's known declined to present him a contract for the 2023 season.

Reyes and outfielder Ben DeLuzio were not "tendered" contracts by the deadline and immediately became free agents.

The team announced their "non-tender" decisions a few hours before the 7 p.m. St. Louis time deadline, and said the 40-man roster had been reduced to 37.

In his only full season with the Cardinals, Reyes had 29 saves and went 10-8 with a 3.
