Bob Sykes was the Cardinals' latter day Ernie Broglio

Only twice since Bob Gibson did it in 1968 has a Cardinals hurler pitched an extra-inning, complete-game shutout at Busch Stadium. One involved Mark Mulder beating Houston 1-0 in 10 innings in 2005. The other came on the Fourth of July 40 years ago.

“The temperature on the field was 138 degrees,” said former Cardinals lefthander Bob Sykes, referring to the steamy conditions heightened by AstroTurf on that holiday afternoon.
