BenFred: Cardinals depart Shildt's first camp feeling energized, confident

JUPITER, Fla. • Mike Shildt’s arms were folded loosely across his chest, as they often are. His bat was tucked beneath his left arm, its barrel pointing in the direction of his walk, as it often is and often does. His hat, like usual, was pulled down low over his glasses. His eyes, as always, captured all.

The Cardinals’ 50th manager soaked up every aspect of a fundamental drill during his recent early-morning stroll across a Roger Dean Stadium back field. The work was designed to help players throw to the correct base depending on the score, number of outs and men on base.
