As GM meetings open, Cardinals watch which way trade winds blow

“It was a very different-type offseason in terms of pacing, and we did discuss how that might yield some opportunities much later in the winter,” Brewers general manager David Stearns said Tuesday. “We weren’t tempted by other potential signings or other potential acquisitions early on. We wanted to make sure that whatever we did it was the right fit, and if we ended up doing nothing we were comfortable with that as well.

The first official day of this year’s general manager meetings began with the usual something. There were meetings on rules. Agents circulated to continue gauging the market for their free agents, and many teams, including the Cardinals, visited with competitors to start gaining clarity on the trade market.
