Sporting Kansas City and defender Marcel de Jong mutually agreed to terminate the player’s contract Tuesday after he spent only one season with the club.
De Jong, a member of the Canada men’s national team, appeared in 15 games for Sporting KC last year. He had not been invited back to the second leg of the team’s preseason training camp in Tucson, Ariz., last month.
The move trims Sporting KC’s roster to 25 players five days before it opens the season Sunday in Seattle. The league maximum is 28.
