The Canadian international defender never quite caught on to Sporting KC's roster
Sporting Kansas City terminated defender Marcel de Jong's contract, the club announced on Tuesday. This was a move that had been anticipated as he had been too large of a cap hit for little playing time.
The Canadian international was brought in right before the start of the 2015 season and was looked at as a replacement for Seth Sinovic at left back. It became evident as the season went on, however, that de Jong was not up to par defensively. Rookie defender Amadou Dia became the preferential option at left back, even when Sinovic was out with a concussion.
