Sporting Kansas City coach Peter Vermes was fined Thursday by MLS commissioner Don Garber for publicly criticizing the referees after Saturday’s loss to Philadelphia.
Vermes disagreed with head referee Juan Guzman’s decision to eject midfielder Roger Espinoza in the 87th minute Saturday — a call that was later reversed by an independent review panel.
Guzman dealt Espinoza a straight red card for making contact with Philadelphia midfielder Roland Alberg. On Wednesday, a three-member panel overturned the red-card ejection.
Garber did not disclose which comments prompted the fine, the amount of which was not disclosed, but Vermes told The Star after the match that he knew immediately he planned to appeal the call against Espinoza.
