When he converted a penalty kick to punctuate Sporting Kansas City’s victory Sunday in Texas, Johnny Russell became just the fourth player in franchise history to reach double digits in both goals and assists in a single season.
His first MLS season has progressed swimmingly. And so has his financial reward for it.
Russell has already received a raise on his initial salary, according to figures released Tuesday by the MLS Players Association. After signing a contract that paid him $700,000, Russell has been bumped to $1.33 million, the salary guide states.
That makes him the second-highest-paid player on the team, behind only midfielder Felipe Gutierrez, the best-compensated player in franchise history at $1.
