On a hot, humid weekend evening in morning in July, Sporting Kansas City striker Dom Dwyer stayed after practice to shoot a promotional video. He collected pass after pass, all of them in mid-air, and then turned and fired soccer balls toward a small target in the middle of the net. The drill lasted for several minutes until coach Peter Vermes requested he call it a day.
On Saturday in Frisco, Texas, he applied it to a game.
Dwyer scored a pair of goals — the second one a product of a brilliant individual effort — to help Sporting draw FC Dallas 2-2 on Saturday, earning a road result against the Western Conference leaders.
