USM's Lynch picked in 9th round by Yankees

HATTIESBURG - Following last year's Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, Tim Lynch was given the chance to play professional baseball.

The Southern Miss first baseman was offered free-agent contracts by the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cincinnati Reds but he declined, opting instead to return to the Golden Eagles to play out his senior season.

Lynch's decision paid off. On Friday, the Jupiter, Florida, native was selected by the New York Yankees in the ninth round of the draft with the 278th overall pick.

The 6-foot-2 Lynch started all 61 games for the Conference USA champion Golden Eagles.
